Mr. Bante Adano, head teacher at Barambate Nursery and Primary School in Gas, North Horr Constituency, appreciated the solar lighting systems in his school, noting that “the new solar systems will be used for lighting, printing, and education purposes. The teachers have had to walk long distances to access printing services and charge gadgets required in the new curriculum. Now, we can access these services in our school, which will positively impact the school’s academic performance.”

“Shalom-SCCRR’s support has transformed our school. Shalom constructed a fence, installed solar panels, and provided essential reading and writing materials. This support has created a safe, conducive learning environment for our pupils, who, for many years, bore the brunt of the Pokot-Turkana ethnic conflict. Shalom-SCCRR, has indeed given our children hope for a brighter future.” Mr. Bumula, the head teacher of Loya Primary School

Madam Alice Obiero, a head teacher of Matumaini Integrated Primary School supported by Shalom with water tanks, remarked, “Among other material support, we now, for instance, can store water, and we have clean water for drinking for learners. This has reduced cases of infectious diseases as learners can now frequently wash their hands. This has improved attendance in school, and many remain in school as they have no worries about carrying water from home to school. We thank Fr. Patrick Devine, Fr. Oliver Noonan and all Shalom donors for their generous support and contribution, which have significantly changed our schools in Molo and Kuresoi”

The head teacher of Baragoi Girls Secondary School, Mrs Sarah Lenanguitai, who received solar lighting systems, noted that ‘‘the solar will not only enhance students’ security but also allow them to study longer and improve their academic performance. We also appreciate Shalom-SCCRR’s continued support in our school, providing the students with water tanks and gender sanitary items for the girls.”

“Shalom’s support with essential school infrastructure has given our learners one of the best learning environment – from overcrowded and dilapidated structures to standard classrooms.” Mr. Ambrose Omange, Nyang Primary School Head teacher

“The fence and gate installation has enabled security of the school premises and better control of learners by preventing them from sneaking out of school. Keeping intruders and trespassers away creates a conducive and safe learning environment.” Mr. Joel Chumba, Kipsisiin Primary School, Deputy Head teacher

  • Classroom construction and renovation projects have improved pupil enrollment, enhanced learner concentration, boosted teacher morale, and fostered sustainable peace and development, owing to the conducive teaching and learning environment.
  • The construction of standard toilets and other sanitary facilities has significantly improved the pupil-toilet ratio, which has helped contain related illnesses.
  • Construction of separate toilets for boys and girls has enhanced safety, particularly for girls.
  • The provision of sanitary items has enhanced girls’ menstrual hygiene management and contributed to a reduction in school absenteeism, thus positively affecting their academic performance and bolstering self-esteem.
  • The availability of teaching and learning materials has improved the Learner Textbook Ratio, consequently leading to good academic performance for various schools.
  • The availability of clean drinking water in schools and communities has significantly prevented water-borne diseases and improved handwashing and hygiene practices.
  • Through the implementation of the Shalom Peace Education and peacebuilding activities, there is an ever-growing culture of peace in schools and communities, where pupils, teachers, and parents have continually embraced coexistence, tolerance, and harmonious inter-ethnic schooling and development.
  • Operational schools, running uninterrupted (at 90%+) within the conflict environments, have become hubs and symbols of Peace and inter-communal Sustainable Development.

Rev. Dr Patrick Devine has constantly emphasised since the establishment of Shalom-SCCRR in 2009: “Shalom-SCCRR’s conflict transformation and peacebuilding interventions enable the progress of interethnic and inter-religious school/educational development projects to emerge. These results, in turn, lead to the stabilization and sustainability of peace and development between the former enemies.” Experience has validated this, and it is immensely appreciated by the communities that were formerly in conflict.
