Updates from the field: Amidst Tribal Conflict, Students Pave The Way For A Peaceful Future

While Shalom conducts conflict management workshops to ease tensions between the Dessenach and Turkana, a school in the village of Sies stands symbolic of the peaceful future communities in the region hope to enjoy.

A Lesson in Tolerance

On the Kenyan-Ethiopian border, the education of one group of students includes more than history, math and language skills. These students are learning a far more important lesson; that of tolerance, forgiveness and reconciliation. Run by the Catholic Mission, children from both the Dassenach and Turkana communities learn together, in peace. Hopefully, these children will act as a bridge between the two tribes who, due to clashes over scarce natural resources, finds themselves in constant conflict with one another.

Supplying Tools for Long-Term Learning

Shalom has been working hand-in-hand with the mission to outfit the schools with appropriate infrastructure and material required to create a nurturing learning environment for the children. Thank to our generous donors, we have been able to supply the school with solar panels that provide light for both the dormitory and classrooms. More recently, we have also been able to furnish the classrooms with chairs and desks for the students.

Here is a picture of the students who benefit from the kindness and generosity of our donors.

We thank you – and so do they!
