The Ilemi Triangle Environs delivers a powerful, research-driven exploration of one of Eastern Africa’s most persistent and overlooked conflicts. Drawing on Dr. Patrick Devine’s seminal fieldwork, the book unpacks the complex interplay of environmental hardship, historical marginalisation, and contested territory shaping the Turkana-Dassenach conflict. Set against the harsh realities of the Ilemi Triangle, this work goes beyond analysis-offering practical insights for policymakers, scholars, and peacebuilding practitioners seeking sustainable solutions. Both academically rigorous and deeply grounded in lived realities, it is an essential resource for understanding and addressing violent interethnic conflict in fragile regions.

PATRICK R. DEVINE

Rev. Dr. Patrick Devine, SMA, is an Irish-born missionary priest and internationally recognised peacebuilder with over 35 years of experience across Eastern Africa. Ordained in 1988 with the Society of African Missions, he has worked extensively in conflict-affected regions promoting reconciliation and sustainable development. He is the founder of the Shalom Centre for Conflict Resolution and Reconciliation (Nairobi), which has implemented peacebuilding initiatives in over 30 regions across Eastern Africa. This book builds on his seminal 2009 research, Turkana-Dassenach Conflict: Causes and Consequences, offering a rigorous analysis of the structural drivers, impacts, and dynamics of conflict in the Ilemi Triangle-an ecologically fragile and politically contested region spanning Kenya, South Sudan, and Ethiopia. His work highlights how historical marginalisation, environmental stress, and contested territorial claims intersect to sustain cycles of violence among pastoral communities. Fr. Devine holds a Ph.D. from the University of Nairobi and has lectured at leading institutions including Harvard University and Maynooth University. His work continues to bridge academic research and grassroots practice in advancing durable peace.
