On World Children’s Day, Shalom-SCCRR proudly reaffirmed its commitment to transforming the lives of children in conflict zones. Our informal peace-building curriculum and educational development projects are making a significant impact by effectively breaking the cycle of violence through education. This year, we are in the process of completing 59 School/Educational projects, bringing our total to over 700 development interventions since our founding in 2009, benefiting over 400 educational institutions. The number of students who have benefited directly from Shalom’s intervention now exceeds 250,000. We are determined to continue this vital work and drive lasting positive change for all children.

The school will give children from very impoverished and marginalised areas an opportunity for quality education, thus creating pathways to a brighter future. Education is a powerful tool for breaking the cycle of poverty and inspiring hope and opportunities for the community.

Our programs focus on providing safe, supportive environments where children can learn and grow, equipping them with the skills and knowledge needed to overcome the challenges of violence. By addressing the root causes of conflict and creating awareness about the legacies of war and injustice, we aim to empower children to become architects of their future, thriving in conditions of non-violence and interdependence.

This initiative underscores Shalom-SCCRR’s commitment to transforming children’s lives through peacebuilding and education in their communities.

In Eastern Africa, where Shalom-SCCRR works, at least 1 in every 3 children experiences the tragic realities of conflict; Shalom-SCCRR’s peace and educational projects are indispensable in preventing and overcoming the tragedies of war, marginalisation and poverty. By protecting their lives from the tragedy of killing, murder, maiming and displacement, in addition to preventing PTSD and other trauma-related conditions, we ensure that children (including their families) can live normal lives, be healed and grow holistically. Our educational initiatives foster academic excellence and promote emotional resilience and mental well-being. By disrupting the psycho-social patterns of violence, we are creating a generation of empowered individuals who are aware of their rights and equipped to build a peaceful, just society.

Rev. Dr. Patrick Devine, Shalom-SCCRR International Chairman, joined Ms. Paula Soumaya Domit, a Master’s in Public Policy Candidate at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, an intern with Shalom, participating in a delivery of school development materials funded by Shalom-SCCRR to Enkusero Sampu Primary & Junior Sec. School, located in the semi-arid pastoral area mostly inhabited by the Maasai Community, in Kajiado County, Kenya.

Shalom-SCCRR also engages children in many schools, providing its informal educational curriculum syllabus on peacebuilding. These programs help children understand the importance of conflict transformation and resolution leading to peaceful coexistence, fostering generations that value non-violence and collaboration. Our work extends beyond the classroom as we engage the wider communities to create environments supporting child safety and development. We build a support network that ensures every child’s well-being by educating parents, teachers, and community leaders about the importance of child safeguarding. This holistic approach is essential in transforming conflict-affected areas into safe havens where children can thrive.

Shalom-SCCRR envisions a world where every child can meet their basic human needs and realise their full potential, no matter their circumstances. We want people to prosper in their own environments, not becoming victims of war – being killed, maimed, having to seek asylum or refugee status. We sincerely appreciate our donors and supporters, whose unwavering commitment is essential in broadening our impact and reach. Together, we are not just constructing schools and providing vital resources; we are creating pathways for children to break free from the chains of violence and poverty. We are committed to empowering the next generation to thrive in a culture of interdependence where each person cares for everyone’s mutual well-being, security, and development.
